During this week of the Palimpsest brief, I experimented with non-traditional methods of creating works & iterations of my printed found matter.
Method 1: photocopier

Last week my map ripped apart at the folds, which inspired me to try rearranging the map. I decided to photocopy my rearranged map and then I gradually distorted it more.
I also photocopied the map line-art works I made last week, inspired by Ingrid Calame. Firstly, I moved the map around as it photocopied to distort them. For the 3rd work here, I photocopied my rearranged map directly onto my map line-art work. This added another layer of map lines.
I used the same method for this map line-art work too, the third work having both my rearranged maps and one of my other works from last week photocopied onto the map line-art.

I photocopied and layered more different works onto and next to each other, experimenting & creating different collages and layers.
Method 2: fax machine
For this work, I put together some different photocopied experiments to make this grid-like collage,. I then put this through the fax machine. It turned pretty interesting, especially in the places where the ink had a sort of bleeding effect.
Because I liked how that work turned out, I proceeded to put a few more things through the fax machine. For the first 3 works here, I put through one of the ripped off sections of my original ma. When it came out of the fax machine, it came out as a repeated image. For this series of works, I tried prematurely pulling the faxed images out of the fax machine at different speeds and amounts of time. The captions of each work here say the different ways I pulled the faxed image out of the fax machine to give different visual affects. I really liked the vertical faded sections of the faxed images where I had quickly tugged at the faxed image as it was coming out of the fax machine.
faxed normally quick, short tugs at faxed image slow tugs at faxed image random quick, stronger tugs at faxed image pulled the full faxed image coffee print from last week, faxed normally
I really enjoyed letting go and trying different methods of making artworks instead of simply just drawing. I had fun trying different ways of photocopying and using the fax machine. I’ve never done something like this before to create an artwork. Using these methods created imagery that I didn’t even think of making, and I really liked it.
