Ellen Gallagher is an American artist, her images often have underlying links to race and the history around that. Ellen takes images from older magazines usually images from beauty sections, She then overlays these images with textured materials. By doing this Ellen adds a nice amount of texture to her images. This addition of the overlay also adds layering to her images which creates a more elaborate artwork. Ellens work has been influenced by an artist by the name of Agnes Martin. Agnes work like Ellens has a minimalistic look. I find that Ellens work is more complex than Agnes but still holds a minimalistic look which is impressive.
I have experimented with using texture over one of my found printed images. This effect it had was really successful. The last image is my experiment. Like Ellen, I overlayed my image adding bubble wrap to the top of it. By doing this I not only add a textural element but it adds more complexity to a somewhat simple image.
