A Weight Off Your Mind: By Implication

For our brief this week, we began to add planar elements to our linear structures from last week. Personally, I chose to begin working with cardboard and began adding elements to the linear structures and just played around with different ways to link and connect them. I found this challenging to begin with as I didn’t even know where to begin with this kind of thing. I eventually began cutting out some shapes from cardboard and fitting them around the linear structures to see what happened.

This sculpture was the first I had attempted to make. The cardboard I was using wasn’t wanting to bend very much so I tore off one of its layers, revealing a jagged texture underneath. I think the texture works well in this sense as it adds a sense of interest and movement to the sculpture. I had someone tell me it reminded them of a wave so that was pretty cool I suppose. I feel as though this is the sculpture I am most happy with out of the ones I made this week.

For this next sculpture I wanted to create a relationship to the tie wire structure I made in the previous brief. The tie wire sculpture had a lot of spirals in it so I decided to try and incorporate that with the planar materials. I took part of the tie wire structure (seen in the middle) and added some small circles to it to add some movement and as a way to get the cardboard spiral to stay upright. I feel as though this sculpture is interesting, but not as successful as the previous one.

Moving forward, I am going to try make more in the style of the first sculpture, while adding a wobbly element to it as James advised me to do. Hopefully I will be able to make something interesting, and if not, then trace back a couple steps and try again. Although this brief may not be my favourite, I am still trying my best to create interesting sculptures even if I am finding it really difficult.
