‘VERISIMILITUDE’ – ‘Real’ SCULPTURE Making Representations

Clay exploration today involved extending, softening and improving my sculpture’s facial features that I began modelling at the end of last week (Friday 30.07.2021).

Then I added clay to the forehead, rounding it and pulling it forward to make a hemisphere shape. From a side angle view I tried to align the back of the skull and its hemisphere shape to my newly formed hemisphere forehead. Next, I extended the brow line outwards to protrude forward from the forehead, and I added thick arching eyebrows. I rolled and curled the clay into pieces to produce the basic facial features such as eye lids, nose and mouth, and added these to my head sculpture.

02.08.2021. Viewing and Utilizing Photographs. Working from photographs today really gave me an opportunity to focus on the detail of certain portions of the face. I spent time observing the different facial curves and angles, in particular the cheek bone structure. I added clay, adjusted and continued to refine the nose, cheekbones and chin, plus the side shapes of the face. I removed the eye work that I began last Friday, and deepened and hollowed out the eye-sockets, ready to refill.
