Christina Quarles

Christina Quarles is a Chicago born artist who was raised in LA. She was born in 1985 and went to drawing classes throughout childhood. She graduated Hampshire College in 2007 with degrees in philosophy and studio art. She also attended Yale and got her masters of fine arts. She sites Egon Schiele, Frida Kahlo, David Hockney and Phillip Guston as influences. She is a queer, cisgendered, biracial woman. She focuses her art on the paradox of the marginalized being discriminated against through the fragmentation of identity while also being able to use this as a tool to gain more visibility and power. She is interested in conveying ambiguity in her art. She wants to involve people in conversations that they didn’t know was theirs to have. She wants people to feel out of place and uncomfortable. These artworks also work to explore the weight that exists within the human body and the ways in which our identities shift our perspectives of ourselves. I like the dynamic poses and the humanoid features of the figures in her paintings. I like that sometimes they look slightly grotesque but still presented in a light and fluffy way.
