DOWNTIME: Observation of Labour

As I reflect on the last works produced I can see a theme of observation. Nature also has been used as a metaphor or reflection or critique of labour in the human world (This isn’t to say humans aren’t a part of nature). The most recent work has created an open end to this third part of the brief as it can be taken in many directions. Perhaps I play a sound of labour e.g. construction site over the birds flying? The mode of observation that the lens serves as encourages a looking for labour in places not obvious to us. By focusing the lens on labour that isn’t ‘obvious’ how could that guide the viewer to see labour in a new way?

The 1st animations I made looked at objects performing tasks without immediate human presence. Research into TIMOTHY MORTON’s “Object-Oriented Ontology” I am intrigued by the ways objects are evidence of labour in their own regard. Morton’s philosophy speaks of objects in and of themselves outside of human intervention or observation. Perhaps objects have their own sense of life or story to them.

“It claims that things are not components of other things: they have their unique existence and value on their own. The OOO approach is particularly relevant in a context of ecological crisis, especially with regards to our relationship to nature. “
