Verisimilitude: ‘Real’ new light

Over the past few weeks we have been exploring the full potential of materials, how to manipulate objects to fulfill a new purpose, It has opened my mind to the possibilities of what art is and can be.

Introduction: I want you to create sculptures that give the opposing emotional reaction, interested and disgusted, whether the emotion is brought out by simply looking at the sculpture or interacting with it, I want you to give the audience confusing contradicting emotions. Kathleen Ryan brings these two emotions out using texture, color and the range of materials she uses. Highlighting the natural process of rotting fruits, she turns something people tend to try and avoid into an art piece they cant look away from.

Question: In the art world we are too comfortable, artists are recreating pieces prioritizing only a positive emotion, therefore only recreating artworks that make people happy. We tend to repeat the same version of ‘beauty, Is there more to art then what looks nice? I want to push the boundary of ‘what is worthy of your attention?’.

Process: Use everything and anything, Materials of all kinds are welcome, solid, liquid, gas, Digital, etc. but make sure that it is cheap or scrap, do not break or do irreversible change to an object of value, The focus is about using a range of materials of all kinds to provoke opposing emotional reactions.
