Discover, Uncover, Recover brief

Richard Page was a photographer I found really interesting by the way different shots give different perspectives and how you view the photo. With the first artwork called “The Dialogue of the dogs” I found this photo interesting by the way it was photographed in a low angle, giving the perspective of how dogs, cats, rats, and other creatures view things in the world. And I think that is why the photographer has included dogs within this photo but also a little kid on it’s bike to show how kids also view things that are very high. This photo was similar to Paul Shambroom’s photo which was photographed under a table to show a different perspective of how we view a table.

This was another photo by Richard Page, and I found it interesting because he has taken this photo from a very high spot to highlight how mountains can be very high, but also having the contrast with that little village being so small.

Edith Amituanai was another photographer I found interesting and enjoyed because of her idea of featuring her home in her photographs. For example in the photos below is kids walking in school uniform, but also kids playing in their backyards which give flashbacks of me being a little kid in the past. I think this was a really cool idea because it shows others your identity, where you grew up, the life style, and your traditions or your whakapapa.

Weigh off your mind : Drawing Grapefruit

Draw exactly the same line 1000 times

In the first of week of Weigh off your mind brief, using materials we had and also following instructions. With this artwork, without thinking of what to do but following instructions and drawing 1000 line, although I doesn’t really seem to be exact the same size, but I made something I didn’t expect and the results came out pretty good. Having that form of a square with a x in the centre to bring in the idea of lines and how they can’t be separated whether they’re curved or straight lines.

This also had some connection to the brief as it clearly puts weight off your mind and allows you create things just by following steps of instructions. Although I was following the instructions given, I knew what artwork was going to look like just by following instructions and thinking of different ways you could make.

Entopic Graphomania

Entopic graphomania was an interesting way of making art by the way it was set out, put dots on newspaper and then connecting them. I found this really enjoyable and interesting because I didn’t have to think of ideas to make art, it was basically following instructions and making different drawings. What I learnt from this session of the brief is that it didn’t have any weight on my mind or overthink the idea of making, even if it turned out good or not it was all about experimenting and ways of thinking to different outcomes of the artwork. Something I would like to take out of graphomania is ways of inventing different drawings and turning them into actual objects or possibilities of those drawings.

Another artwork of connecting dots and making a different drawing. Another thing I learned about graphomania is how these lines are formed and connected. In the first drawing above, the lines were curved or round and it created a different outcome whereas the second, third, and fourth drawings is just straight lines. This all came down to being experimental and more free of what to do.

CV Automatism

Image in the printing room of myself in front
Image with just the lines

Today I tried out the CV Automatism software, making different drawings of linear 2D form and experimenting. I was interested in the way the image is 2D but it has some sort of depth inside the linear structure, and gives you a different perspective. It looks 3D the way it has been set out, almost like a roof of a house. I sort of knew what the outcome was going to be while I was making this, to have a 2D figure but also 3D as well as some of the lines were long and connected to each other creating a very unusual shape. The points where the computer has decided to use and how it has turned out, having depth but also volume and mass within the work made it look very interesting to me.

However I learned the way these lines have been made shows the differences of the object and also the depth of the room or the image that creates these different shapes. Reflecting on the image itself, working towards changing the settings and creating interesting shapes.

Art Gallery visit 2021

On Tuesday 20th April we visited the Auckland Art Gallery just down the road from campus. Something I found interesting and challenging about our visit to the gallery was the different techniques/equipment that featured in each of the artworks displayed on the walls, because it was very unique and satisfying. But also the way it was displayed, either on walls, have it hanging down, or displaying it in dark rooms. In these artworks by Robert Jahnke called Ripeka(NZ writer, artist, designer) with the neon light, it reminded me of the churches with the different coloured glass having the sun shine into it, it creates that glow within that space. The same applies with this artwork by Jahnke, he has used the light to make his sculptor stand out and decides to display it in a dark room which gives it a different affect. Robert Janhke has other different artworks like ATA having different designs but same use of neon lights.

I also found this artwork interesting/challenging and loved, because of the paintings/patterns within the circle almost trying to hypnotize us with the use of the twirls. Reflecting on it just by looking in the inside of the circle and twirls of the patterns were almost like an eye. It also reminded me of the artworks by Will Handley and Conor Harrington, with the use of the lines but also the whole artwork itself reminded of artworks by a New Zealand artist name Michel Tuffery and how he uses letters and draws inside the letter, similar to this artwork, the designs are in the circle and it gives it a different affect.

Atapo from the side

In the artwork “Atapo” by Mata Aho Collective & Maureen Lander, I found this difficult to understand and inspect by the way it was set up, having all these black sheets with holes in them giving it different effects and outcomes to the whole sculpture. Although it was difficult to understand what the artists intentions were, it was really interesting to see the hole itself getting smaller and smaller if you look at it in person. It also gave a sense of thinking with the illusion or hypnotized images that twirls, and it seems like you’re going into the artwork just by looking at it from the front. Also looking at this artwork, it was similar to an artwork by one of my teachers in high school Mr Toetu’u and the Britomart flag below, it’s like the pattern is fading in and it also has a different outcome by the way it’s formed. Atapo gave me a different perspective by the way I viewed it, but also referring back to the brief A Weight off your mind and how it incorporates the diamond shape as the weight, but the black sheets as something that holds the weight being off the ground and in the air.

Palimpsest brief Reflection

Artworks from Palimpsest brief as well as prints from printmaking workshops

Reflecting on the Palimpsest brief, I found it really difficult to adapt to the way it was run because of over thinking what to make instead of just making art. Although it was fun creating some artworks and using different materials to create new work, I still couldn’t understand the brief fully. Unfortunately I was unable to post these images one by one as I lost them on my way home, anyways as they always say “the show must go on”. As I was looking at my art it reminded me of Conor Harrington and Will Handley’s works, with the use of the stripe lines and how creates a different affect to their artworks, but mines is totally different.

In the first artwork(top left), was a print I made in the printmaking workshops using monoprint. This was made through two separate plates, one with the blue wavy lines, and the other with green straight lines. This created the contrast between the two plates into one artwork, but also having a connection to the rest of the artwork with the lines and also one artwork overlaying the other. Also the two large A3 artworks on bottom which is also printmaking but using dry point etching, tracing or using old material to create a new artwork. By the way these three A3 artworks have been set out to show the difference, although they are small artworks but the massive outlines of the paper making them isolated from the rest of the other artworks create these ideas of making very different but still have some parts of the artwork that feature in other works.

In the middle section of the art wall we have similar artworks with repetitive patterns and different colours. Similar artworks but slight differences in them with materials added to each artwork. To have layers on each artwork but still have similar appearance create this flow between them, this flow has been shown by the way it has been set out with artworks going different directions but have a line flowing through to make this connection between them.

With the pink painted paper and tracing of the soldier taken from the large A3 work below to relate it back to the rest of the artworks, but in a slight different format and the way it is set out. We also have a newspaper artwork with the tracing of the soldier but with patterns within the artwork, looks very impossible to see so apologies for that. But I have used newspaper to introduce the idea of the parallel lines of the text and make artwork with this newspaper, this also can relate to the patterns which is scattered everywhere to show the similarities.

The plain paper and tracing of a Samoan traditional necklace in the middle, I introduced that for the same reason of creating new works from previous artworks, this was to show the contrast between the type of paper that has been used. Throughout the brief creating layers but also making new artworks from previous ones was a challenge, and this made me think of the way some artworks turn out, by using different type of material to create a different affect to the outcome of it. Something I would learn from that is that is to always be free and keep making anything because it will eventually be something. I want to keep learning from making heaps of artworks and layers on each one to make sure it is at its best.
