DESIRE – ‘BODY SERIES’

NATURE INHABITS THE (BED) PRODUCT

All humans desire, thus value products and commodities.  The bed is one such product that is valued, because sleep is a commodity that cannot be purchased or traded. Manufactured from a range of raw material commodities such as timber, steel and plastic, plus natural and synthetic fibre fabrics, a quality bed is a costly product. Adding the extra items that cover it, are another expense. People spend so much of their lives in bed, therefore the quantity and quality of sleep is important, and getting regular sleep is imperative to feeling rested.

As I was ripping and shredding the bed in the deconstruction process, I shifted the large mattress around, and to my surprise nature intervened.  It had rained heavily the day and night before, and two (very large and long) worms were curled up on the edges of the mattress, either having a conversation, or intercourse… I think, the later as they looked passionate in red.  By turning over the heavy mattress, they gently fell off and I almost squashed them!  I was already photographing my bed demolition, so I zoomed in to photograph the wet worms.

I couldn’t resist inventing a small story: ‘Desire’, (see Sculpture Video and timeline of photographs below) as I observed their actions.  Unfortunately, my body vibrations caused them to sense a predator, one raced off, as fast as it could slither, and the other rolled over, as if to say just eat me.  Or, perhaps their desires had been fulfilled on the deserted bed, just before I disturbed them.

As I value all creatures, I rescued both animals by placing them back into the garden soil where they are truly valued.  Earthworms are the clever engineers of soil, with the ability to burrow and tunnel. Humans need their help to prevent land erosion and flooding.  By aerating, loosening the nutrients and enriching the soil with minerals, they not only drain it, they make it more fertile.

Many earthworms are under threat, and some are endangered. Human commodity manufacturing and product consumption, and the use of pesticides, manure, heavy metals, acidic salts and waste products are changing the habitat of the earthworm. People such as myself care about the endangered cute creatures like the Panda bear. Yet, if people really care about the planet, Earthworms are far more significant creatures, they are needed for the survival of our planet.

‘Disunity, Unconnected Pathways’ Loss of Senses Sculpture: Clay, Animal Hair, Woven Kete

Subject CEREBRUM (BRAIN) – The Cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres called the Cerebral. The Parietal brain lobe connects and controls the messages from the five major senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch. Loss of the senses can happen at any age, due to viruses, allergies, nasal polyps, sinus infections, medications, eyesight failure, loud noise, etc.

Valuing the brain is as important to me as valuing the outer shell of the body. It’s what’s inside that really counts. I value my brain. It takes me places, and lets me see, smell, hear, taste and touch the world in my unique way. The brain is a taonga to value and care for.
