Day 4: Trial and Error.

Today we started off by trying to come up with a machine by using what we have. After the workshop that Dieneke had set up it was great to see how humans can be the “machines”. This enabled us to get our creative juices and come up with our own machine in the sense where we are a part of it. We came up with a machine to draw whatever we liked. By using rope, a wood cut off and markers. We were able to come up with a machine that needed tension and pressure to create drawings onto the cardboard. At first we just tested out drawing random things onto the piece. But then we decided to go with vertical lines as a response to the splashes the fan has made. It was really cool to see how it turned out after layering up the line drawings.

It was kinda unfortunate for us because we had planned to fix the fan and extend it. We had tried to go to the workshop but it had been very busy. So we’ll see tomorrow if we can get it done. But for now we will just work with what we got.

Day 3: SAFE FROM EXPLODING IS A THING.

Today was another exciting day for our team! Continuing from yesterday’s work, we decided to keep going with the small box/fan. To start off we thought to texture and tape the inside of the box we had at hand. However, we ran into an issue where our small fan’s cable snapped.

Since the second small box idea didn’t get run. As a collective we decided to move on and upscale since we had all the materials there. While making the bigger scale of what we’ve done was going well we did go through some issues. Because we were working on a bigger scale. We had to find a successful way to make this run as we’d like. Things like the the fan/ box was double the size of our last test run. There was leaks although we fully taped the boxes. We also had to come up with a way to stand the fan up.

We ditched the ink tray because somehow we couldn’t get that part right. So thinking this was clever, we thought making a funnel a hole at the top of the box was a brilliant idea. While we were testing it out James came in (must’ve been like these idiots). We’ve fully forgotten that we had an electrical appliance running, and pouring liquid substance on it for a good minute. Lucky for us a hazard was stopped right there.

James had us thinking of ways where we could better the fan situation and make it safe. He suggested that we take the fan to the workshop and extend the rod so that the mechanisms would be outside and have the propeller in the box spinning.

Day 2: Testing it out!

Success! It was very exciting to have it running as we managed to have it go as planned. So the fan ran for like half a minute then it stopped cause it didn’t make any more weird noises. But that was all good! However, while it was running we did come across an issue where the box leaked a little. So now we know for the next box it should be fully tape proof on all the joins/edges. Apart from that everyone was pretty stoked to see it work out. I think I’m most excited to see how we play around with the suggested ideas from today. It’d be cool to see how the size scaling, different textures and surfaces will play a part in making a difference or not.

Our first test run!
Our first piece!

Being able to see the box hung up was pretty satisfying. There’s this kind of light boxing violence created whilst not seeing the commotion. Even the sound going on inside whizzing, and splatters made us all curious. It reminded me of the artist Margie Livingston work- Day Hike: Lake 22, 2018. Where she uses a backpack to drag a canvas around as she hikes and uses it to create the piece. Obviously the effects of the end outcomes aren’t the same but the idea where you don’t know what’s going to happen or get is where I feel like they correlate. It’s crazy! We don’t know what to expect what the machine will create.

Day 1: Art Machines

Today was mostly forming our collaborative group and brainstorming. For our group of five we came up with six ideas. We decided that each person come up with at least one idea so that everyone takes part. We made a vote on the one we liked most and chose one idea. For the idea, we chose ‘ Fans with paint brushes attached’. The function of the machine is that the fan will do the work. So brushes will be attached to the fans, dropped in a liquid medium, when the fan is turned on it’ll create an abstract. As a group we decided that we could bring different surfaces to allow interesting things to happen in the box. Things like plastic, cardboard and paper. Looking forward to the outcomes with the team!

Some Artist Inspo: Vegas World 2002.

This week we had a presentation in class by Dineke where she had shown some artist works. An artist that stood out to me during the slide show was Claus Kienle/ Frauke Hanke and the works Vegas World 2002. His approach in pairing images together really stood out to me. I think that really helped me to think about how I wanted my work to come together. Also just how I would like to convey a story.

I also really like the medium(film) that the artist used to capture in those moments to tell their story. And also the texture that comes off in the outcomes.

Pinhole Photography.

Pinhole was interesting to learn. And the fact that I haven’t done it before as well made it more intriguing. I think learning how to use exposure times to capture what you wanted to at that moment was really cool. Although the outcomes weren’t instant it was also very pleasing to take time to process those captured moments in the dark room.

At first when I tried taking pinhole photos the first five or six tries were so bad. The location I chose had too much sunlight so the photos were too dark. But as I kept taking pinhole photos they started turning out okay. I learnt to adjust and estimate times to expose the light sensitive paper which was pretty cool.

I really enjoyed doing pinhole photography, especially the processing part of it. From dropping it into chemicals, and scanning, to processing it in photoshop to get cleaned was a pretty cool process to fall through with.

I think I would really enjoy doing more pinhole photography and experiment with it later on in the year just to learn more about it.

exposed time: 1min, weather: sunny

This one I think was a bit over exposed and I held the can up so it was shaky.

For these photos I tried scanning them and it worked however I couldn’t seem to get the files right so I’m hoping at least one of them works out.

This is a pinhole of a bike in front of the WM building.

While doing the scanning of those two photos I had above I found it pretty easy to scan. However, getting the photos transferred and getting the sizing of the images right was a tricky one for me. I decided to take a picture of the scan just using my phone. I was really happy how this one turned out.

Discovering- A walk through Stanmore Bay.

This is around the block in my neighbourhood road to the beach.

This week, because we were discovering places and things, I decided to do the tourist walk around my neighbourhood too. It was really cool to do this but at the same time it was kinda hard. Although it was a challenge, I think that capturing places that you are so used to, you find it new when you look at it through a different lens.

Mobil station in Whangaparaoa which is my go to place.
Buildings for lease. I call them the dead buildings nothing ever happens here.

Because Whangaparaoa is a small town and is mostly known for retiring and the beaches that surround it. I chose to put these photos up because when I think of these places I feel like they aren’t as appreciated that much, but somehow there’s so much beauty in it. These are some spots that I pass almost everyday at different times.

This is around the corner off my street. I walk by here every morning.

Discovering- A walk through Tamaki Makaurau.

A light shining on a tree in Queens Street.

This week we were given time to explore Auckland city as tourist. It was interesting to look around with that perspective in mind. It made me more aware of my surroundings and a lot of things that I haven’t seen before popped up.

An alley way off High Street.

What I also found really interesting visually was how light sits on objects around and on buildings. Our first task was to pair up and do a coin toss to see where it would take us. I think doing the coin toss was good but at the same time it felt tiring and time consuming. so for the coin toss I ended up in Aotea square and Britomart. I thought. this was a really interesting way to start the brief.

Final Exhibition.

This is my final piece.

For this piece I decided to use past pieces to make one whole piece. It’s complicated but I like it because first of all the piece in the back was to support the casted strips that are angular looking. I was gonna take them out but I decided to leave it because I felt the it was complete that way.

My final piece is made from metal rods and plaster with cloth.

For this piece I really like the dirty, construction look this piece has which was what I was going for. I also added acrylic paint black and white because it it kinda added another dimension to the sculpture.

While doing this brief I think I could’ve done better or could have changed a couple of things. Although it was challenging I was glad with what I came up with.
