Identity

To start this project I looked back on previous sculptures we had done and one of my assemblages stood out to me. I was intrigued by the way I had made all these different parts fit together to make something unique and when I related this back to the brief I had set I decided that it fit perfectly. the way that I am choosing how these pieces fit together and how the connect is how I look at myself I have chosen to put certain things about be together and have connected them in away that is unique to who I am… I have shaped myself in the same way I shaped this sculpture. I then decided to go on and do a real sculpture as well as the digital because the material has textures, mistakes and markings that contribute to its whole and only from certain angles will you be able to see certain imperfections just the same way I do.

Real: identity

“I will walk with you” By Suhaimi Fadzir

This particular work by Suhaimi Fadzir is a representation of reclaiming his religion and rejection of others views that have been shaped around negative actions by others that hold the religion. His work conveys pride and strength in his faith and who he is.

your task is to create 1-3 works that represents you. It needs to have a simplistic way of showing your own understanding of what your identity is.
using what ever materials you have available to you.

you have full range on how you present your sculpture as long as it is documented and uploaded to your blog by 14th of October (Thursday).

Digital Assemblages

I had to take screenshots as I couldn’t figure how to upload them properly. A lot of my models came up different than expected when I imported them into mesh mixer. It was still a fun experience learning how to do all this digitally.

Assemblage sculptures

I honestly really struggled with the assemblage brief and this is all I could come up with…… I did my best to think about the way things were connecting and being held together. I used crochet as ways of connection as well as puzzle like connection and regular old string. I like the crochet and stones as the stones balance out the cardboard so it doesn’t fully fold to lie on one side.

Site interventions

I struggled a lot with this task, I found that I couldn’t muster up any ideas. So I went out and looked around my house. I decided I had lots of different things to use and that’s probably why I was struggling because there were so many options. I picked three objects and placed them in places that they don’t belong and that’s how I developed my site interventions.

Real space

changing the perspective

These images show the space I chose (my closet) at each different stage of alterations. I began with subtracting the original content, first shoes then clothes. This left me with a empty space. Drawing inspiration from Marina Abramovic’s Imponderabilia and Bruce Normans Green Light Corridor that we were shown during the discussion of the brief, I decided to put my sister and her partner inside. It was interesting to watch that my sister was un-phased and went in comfortably but her partner was restricted due to his hight and couldn’t get out fast enough.

One minute sculptures

today we were tasked with eight one minute sculptures, I had no idea where to start so I wrote a list of actions/verbs down I.e lying, leaning, hiding, balancing the list went on. I then went around my living room and kitchen trying to find objects to work into the sculptures. Reflecting on these photos it’s cool to see objects being used in a different context and purpose than what they have been built for, just as I myself have been put into a new context and at the moment was seen as a “sculpture”.

Final summary

Reference photo

I have chosen the above images to show as my final summary because of the fact they aren’t something I would have usually painted.

painting.1 was a reference to her eyes as they are the most prominent feature on her face in my opinion. This was the first painting I had done and one of my favourites. I don’t usually use so much colour in my paintings nor do I throw paint on with out thought the way I did with this work but I wanted to show a reference to the previous mark making exercises we did in studio.
painting. 2 this painting is an obvious response to my first, reusing the marking technique, I was still trying to make the eye a strong point in the painting.
painting.3 is a totally different way of painting compared to my previous works, in this painting I was responding to the darker colours I had used in some of my other paintings and using different techniques to make certain marks and really letting go of control rather than trying to make it perfect I wanted to keep the portrait idea and instead of focusing on the eyes I black them out fully to make it just as alluring but in a different way.
