By Implication – After Atapō: ‘spatial sketches’

Maureen Lander’s work ‘Atapō’ shows how she has used planar, linear elements as well as light to imply depth and volume. Through my first ‘spatial sketch’ I combined a series of flat shapes by cutting slits in them. Through combining different flat shapes, I was able cast different light and shadows which created more depth and emphasised the mass of each shape.
I then created a similar sketch by hollowing out the inside of each shape and leaving just an outline of the the shape, then combining them. This emphasised the different sharp points on each shape which I thought implied a sense of volume amongst the different shapes.
Focusing on combining triangular shapes, I also brought in another textural element by ripping the inside of the cardboard material to see how this relationship could imply a visual language.
I combined shapes in a more compact form by bunching many shapes tightly. In contrast to my initial sketches, doing this created a deeper sense of mass and volume by attaching the shapes closer and more compact.
I tried combining a series of linear, wavy shapes to see how this shape and sketch can imply mass and volume. However I feel that in contrast to the previous sketches, this shape emphasised a lack of mass and volume because of the lack of sharp points and shadows.

Yellow Talk
a) All colours are imaginary except yellow. Yellow is the colour
of sun at its height. Other colours are shades of yellow in
varying degrees which have been given different names, as if
each of them exist independently. purely for idealogical
purposes.-Dr. Song.
b) Yellow is the only imaginary colour.-Dr. Suzuki.
c) All colours have yellow in it.-Dr. Lee.
d) All colours are imaginary.-Dr. Kato.
– This excerpt from the book made me think about how people perceive colour, specifically yellow. Looking around, I captured yellow objects around my house and used a tool on my phone to just focus on the yellow parts of the photos. This made me realise the true vibrancy of the colour and the different shades of yellow which surround us.
A PIECE FOR ORCHESTRA
Count all the stars of that night
by heart.
The piece ends when all the orchestra
members finish counting the stars, or
when it dawns.
This can be done with windows instead
of stars.
– This excerpt made me think about how music is when every instrument counts through the music composition in different durations and patterns till everyone stops counting; and that is when the song finishes. I poked small holes in the music notes on the music score then put it against a light, to emulate a starry sky.
Room Piece
Take the sound of the room breathing.
1) at dawn
2) in the morning
3) in the afternoon
4) in the evening
5) before dawn
Bottle the smell of the room of that
particular hour as well.
– This excerpt made me think about the sound and atmosphere that each time of the day can bring. Through a series of sound-wave like lines, I used different colours to represent the sound and atmosphere of the dawn, morning, afternoon, evening, and before dawn in my room.

Entopic Graphomania

Entopic Graphomania is a method of drawing where you create your own set of rules, identifying details and connecting them.
I have taken a page out of a magazine about someone’s trip to Africa. I have noticed some adjectives and words which evoke emotion. I started connecting the circles words to the surrounding words with straight lines. I then added more wavy lines to add more texture, and to further emphasise the positive emotions in these words.
I took another travel article about a trip to China. I circled some key adjectives about the trip and connected the words together with looped lines.

day one tricks, take a weight off your mind

1.) prompt – Make three identical drawings of the same ‘weight’ using
different materials.
– I have created three of the same drawings using paint, a wash, and pencil to try and create three drawings which visually are the same ‘weight’
2.) prompt – Make three different drawings of the same ‘weight’ using the
same materials.
– i’ve used acrylic paint to create three different drawings which emulate the same amount of depth and weight.
3.) prompt – Draw exactly the same line 1000 times.
– i’ve used this prompt to create the same lines however in different directions and mediums.
4.) prompt – Make an invisible line that everyone can see.
– i’ve created a series of overlapping lines then erased them.
5.) prompt – Make the largest drawing possible.
– I’ve created a small drawing of a face however, expanded the scale of it with the surrounding frame to make it seem like a ‘large drawing’
