Discover, Uncover, Recover Walks 1-4

Within this post is my take on our first weeks discover, uncover, recover task. I have included maps, rubbings, and of course, the images. I found this task interesting as it challenged me to look at the familiar in a new way. It forced me to look from new angles and change the way I viewed my surroundings. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the mental challenge.

Throughout each walk, I found myself not only seeing things differently, but focusing my attention on different parts of my environment. For example, during the detective brief I found myself photographing more details and the minute. Whereas in the tourist brief I gravitated more towards environments. Overall, I feel good about this task and what I managed to produce with the brief.

Core Studio – Day 1 & 2

Entopic Graphomania

In day 2 we did some Entopic Graphomania artwork as you can see above. In looking back on my work I had some critiques; In the right image after glossing over it again after the class I realised I missed a couple numbers on the page, I also regret not doing it in pen as it would have looked sharper and cleaner and that is the style I enjoy.

Entopic Graphomania Attempt 2

In this drawing I decided to place the original book page over a piece of paper and press hard enough on the page on each of the dots so I could connect them in a different way/style on a new material to get a different outcome.

To extend this artwork I decided to take a new page out of the book and do the same thing and overlay it on a different angle to add more depth and clutter

In my final reflection next time I hope to find a deeper meaning to further enhance the creativity of my artwork

Weight prompt exercises 3/3/21

Draw infinite space – Uroborus alongside parallel lines representing infinite space
Make a drawing 200mm x 200mm x 200mm
Developed on drawing to add color, block out areas with solid color and play with a reflection copy.
Draw 1000 lines (no I didn’t count…)

Day 1’s Work :)

This is based off of the instructions we got a list of, I chose number 4. So I decided to draw 3 of the same image, but with different materials. I understood materials as pens.
And here’s my 1,000 lines. But they’re not the exact same size… didn’t realise they had to be the same size till I re-read the instructions.

Day 1: First Post, Yoko Ono ‘Grapefruit’ Instructions

Task: Choose 3 instructions from Ono’s Grapefruit book.

First Instruction:
Star Talk
The star Uranus is
Blue
Red
Silver
Green
White
Rainbow colour
Process image of “Star Talk“. I used coloured pencils and a compass. I really liked how the colours all swirl together harmoniously as well as the combination of harsh/soft lines and harsh/soft colours. I really enjoyed the aesthetic of this and would like to continue this in the rest of the prompts.
Instruction 2:
Scream
– against the wind
-against the wall
-against the sky
For this i used a compass, coloured pencils and pencil. I chose to draw different forms/auras of what it would look like to yell at the wind, wall, and sky. I don’t think the coloured pencils blended as seamlessly as i would’ve liked them to. Perhaps acrylic paint would work. I do enjoy the vibrance of the colours though.
Instruction 3:
Line talk
A line is a
– sick circle
– billion lines that are cluttered into a narrow space
– unfolded world
– agressive dot
Once again i used coloured pencils and pencil.

Edit: Responding to Feedback

Feedback was to re-visit my prompts and to do them with different mediums

STAR TALK: URANUS IS RAINBOW COLOUR

For the second attempt, i chose watercolour, I absolutely love the saturation of colours as well as the leaks, drips and blur of the different hues, compared to the softer appearance of the coloured pencils. The watercolour makes it feels more alive and exciting.

SCREAM AGAINST THE WIND, WALL, AND SKY

For this, i chose to do with pencil, wanting to see what the drawing would look like without any saturation. It’s very contrasting to the coloured pencil, although i liked the bright colours, I think i prefer the way it turned out in pencil. There’s an ominous tone to the auras. I feel like they’re more mysterious as the absence of colour does not give any indication of what emotion to feel.

A LINE IS A : AGGRESSIVE DOT

Specifically in my feedback, it was suggested to choose a medium that could express aggression. At first i did a harsh splat with a small paint brush using watercolour, using the colour red as the most obvious colour to represent anger. And then i thought of the scene in Mulan where they use calligraphy paintbrush and when the cricket, the dragon, or the man, i can’t remember, was writing and splated the paint brush down intensely. So with this random thought, i thought to do it in black, first in watercolour, with the same small brush. I didn’t achieve the right amount of aggression from the final image, so i opted for a bigger paint brush and to do it with acrylic. With this, you get to seen the impact of the brush more clearer and the aggression of the..aggressive dot. I did it again with red to symbolise the hot flush of anger. I think using acrylic and a bigger brush was able to communicate more emotions, as we see the gesture of the brush impacting the paper, rather than the small coloured pencil scribble that I initially did.

A Weight Off Your Mind- Day One Tricks

Prompt: Keep making a drawing until you have run out of marker/pencil.

As I scribbled I realised that in order to run out of my pencil faster I needed to use more pressure which coincidentally went under the theme of ‘weight’. This then caused the paper to rip making an interesting hole in the center which also linked to the prompt: ‘Make a hole in a piece of paper and climb through it.’ The circles around the hole got darker the closer to the center creating depth to the hole.

Discovering_1

A normal stroll in my neighbourhood. It was an interesting exercise for me, seen as I have so often walked this path. But simply spending more time in one spot, crouching low or climbing higher, was not only enlightening but simply entertaining.

Out of Ink

On the first week, we were given a list of task to do. I chose to keep drawing until my pen ran out. It created a heavy look around the figure.
