(4) Art Machine – Pendulum

We opted to make a pendulum machine for our final machine. We wanted to keep our theme and thoughts of rhythm and time consistent, and a pendulum was ideal for that. The rhythmic pace of the pendulum moving back and forth added to its perfection. As I previously stated, we wanted to be as resourceful as possible. Therefore the pendulum was made with what we had. A cup was connected to two chairs and filled with watered-down paint. Which was then allowed to trickle down over the paper.

We discovered early on in the pendulum’s development that the holes made beneath the cup were too small, resulting in intriguing dapples of paint in a patterned pattern. Every time the cup looped around, it generated a series of nearly identical circles that were spaced in an unusual way to represent the length and distance the cup travelled while being hurled around.
