Pendulum

On our last day of art machine making we decided to make some pendulum art. We did this by attaching a paper cup between two chairs with a cup and filling it up with watered down paint.

We found at first our paint was too think to create lines and so we ended up with some interesting dots. After experimenting with the hole size and thickness of the paint we managed to gain a continuous flow of paint from the pendulum. Below as a video of the process and the successful results.

Most of our machines have been very rhythmic, the slinky and steps being a sort of beat, and the pendulum swinging back and forth at a quickening rhythmic pace almost like a metronome.

It reminded me of Kandinsky’s composition artworks where the painting and colours represent music and rhythm. By using different paint colours we visually represented a different swing/rhythm.
