Painting – Unintentional Mark Making

Continuing over the break I started by experimenting with the same fabric and food colouring as before. I used the top two layers of fabric (old bed sheet and curtain) as before. This time I divided to mix the food colouring with cornstarch to thicken it. It was really interesting as cornstarch and water create a non-Newtonian fluid; a fluid that has properties of both solid and liquid. I then dribbled these colours over the layers of fabric and set it to dry.

Once the colours dried the cornstarch was very flaky. I kept these flaks to use on my next painting.

I really like how the paint has dispersed over the old bed sheet. I like how the colour have blended in some areas but have sharp edges in others. The overall shape feels organic and random. The curtain doesn’t give the desired affect. The colour has stayed almost exactly where I placed it. Which is not what I want as these marks where intentionally done. Any mess screen would do the same as the curtain fabric. A screen would also be easy to wash and reuse.
