Reflection

I really liked experimenting with different materials such as the plaster as I have never used it before and I really liked being able to explore what you can do with it. I also really liked having access to the labs and being able to go down and make your own sculpture out of wood or metal. As the brief was all about showing weight in different ways, I tried to look at juxtaposing the weights of my materials. For example with the laser cut work, I saw the wood as being quite light as it was quite small and thin. I then would juxtapose that with the plaster, making it much larger and more rough looking than the thin wood giving the work as a whole more depth. If I had more time on this brief I would like to experiment more with the lath and plaster walls, I really enjoyed making it and I would have liked to experiment with using colours and making the walls bigger with more intense plaster drips. I would also go back and experiment more with the plaster cardboard pieces and making a work out of them. I found it difficult to go from the sketches into using plaster and wood as I didn’t know what ideas to progress and explore in my work. Overall I was happy with how my work turned out and I enjoyed working with plaster as I have never used It before and I really liked the drip shapes that I made with it.

Final works

After making my lath and plaster wall I decided to go back to my laser cut piece and make it into a more complete work. I decided to attach it to a lump of plaster to give it more weight. I also wanted to link in the lath and plaster idea so I dripped some plaster down the front and back of the wood. I had a bit of trouble getting the right consistency for these drips and had to test it a few times before putting the plaster onto the work.

My other final work was accidental as I had a piece of wood that I had been testing plaster on and a left over piece of wood from the frame of my wall. I had them lent up against the wall and ended up looking like a good piece of work that also linked into the construction idea.

Lath and plaster wall

After finding some scrap wood, I went down to the 3D labs and made the frame with all of the slats in place. My original plan was to make the gaps between each slat different so they are out of line and a bit wonky however I thought about house construction and how all of the measurements have to be perfect when building a house so I decided to make all of my distances evenly measured and spaced out. After building the frame I went back to the studio and started on the plaster. I had a bit of trouble getting the right consistency to get through the gaps but not too thin that it didn’t look accurate. If I were to do this again I would do a test beforehand to get it right. After doing the plaster I realised that it couldn’t stand on its own so I went down to the lab again to make a stand which I also put at 90 degrees just like how a regular wall would join.

Research

After making the laser cut work, I have decided to look at lath and plaster walls. I have been looking at how these types of walls were made in the 1700’s and what they were made of. I have decided I will try to make my own lath and plaster wall with the plaster from the studio.

Laser Cutting

I am really happy with how the plaster experimentations turned out. I especially like the patterns that I pressed into the plaster and the ripped edges. I decided to take one of the photos of the plaster down to the laser cutter to make a work out of the patterns and I was really happy with how it turned out.

Plaster Experimentation

After looking at the Sketches that I have done, I have been really interested in looking at ripped edges of cardboard. I have been experimenting with what happens when different types of cardboard get dipped into plaster, making plaster shapes with fabric and finding different textures and patterns that can be printed into the plaster.

Week 2- Sketches

For this work I was mainly focusing on shapes and what happens to the shapes when you layer and overlap them. I was quite happy with how this work turned out, I like the corrugated cardboard texture and I would like to use more of it in my next works.

In this sketch, I was working on how different materials naturally form. I started ripping up strips of paper and found that they started to curl, I decided to use this and make all of my paper elements circular shaped. I then thought about juxtaposing this idea and having a stronger more geometric shape, I decided that I would do this with thicker cardboard as this doesn’t curl like the thinner paper does. I was happy with the outcome of this work and I would like to do more works that include this idea of juxtaposing geometric and organic.

For this sketch I wanted to use the wire. I found it difficult to get the wire to stay in the right positions to hold up the triangle however I liked how it looked and how I could get interesting curved lines. Overall I wasn’t very happy with the end result of the piece but i would like to continue using wire in more of my future works.

In this work, I was trying to look for different ways to connect pieces together. I like how the circular shapes look together however maybe next time I wouldn’t connect it to the cone shape and play around with more of the connections and how different materials affect it.

Art Gallery-Maureen Lander and Mata Aho Collective

I found this work really interesting to look at. I was intrigued by the layering of materials that have been used and how cutting different shapes out of each layer creates an amazing depth that draws you into the work. I found it interesting walking around the piece, looking at how it changes as you see the fabric from different perspectives and when the light hits it differently. I was surprised when I was walking around the piece to find that the layers are made of a mesh material as when you are looking at it from a distance, the colour and the scale of it makes it look very heavy and dense however when you come to lookup close it becomes more delicate and gives a much lighter effect.

I really like the colours and the patterns on this piece. I really liked how the light reflected off it when you walk past. this work also challenged me as the shiny green colour underneath seemed to have a pattern on it and it made me have to look at it for a log period of time to try to understand the patterns and how they are working together to create the overall look of the work.

I found these works really interesting, I really like the unusual shapes and how they made each one a different colour. I also really like the shadows that were being projected onto the wall from the different light angles. These pieces challenged me as I was unsure on what idea the artist was looking at and the colour choices, as I was trying to work out why the artist picked these certain colours for these works.

Grapefruit instructions

Instruction: Imagine the clouds dripping. dig a hole in your garden to put them in.

When I read this Grapefruit instruction it made me think about drawings I used to do as a kid, this is whey I decided to Draw this idea in this childlike style. I found the word dripping interesting and I thought that making the clouds drip in this way would be more visually interesting than regular raindrops.

Instruction:When a person hurts you so badly,
Line up 100 panes of glass in
the field and shoot a bullet
through it.
Take a copy of a map made by
the cracks of each glass and
send a map a day for 100 days
to the person who has hurt you.”

For this instruction I decided to focus in on the map made of cracks. I found an old map and drew where I imagined cracks would be if the map did crack. From there I then cut along these lines and made smaller maps which I put together onto a piece of paper to look like glass that has shattered. I have found these tasks challenging as I haven’t been able to clearly visualise what Yoko Ono’s instructions would look like in an art piece.

Entopic Graphomania

In my first Entopic Graphomania work, I started by colouring all of the numbers. from there I made three pathways from each dot, I used a ruler to make sure that the lines were straight going from one point to the other. On my other work I started with the letter G. I decided to change the pen I used to a much thicker pen and I also decided not to rule these lines as I wanted them to be a little more organic than the ruled straight lines. for this work I alternated sides drawing one line on the left then one on the right until the lines connected in the middle and I was happy with how it looked. If I were to do this work again I would like to experiment with using curved lines to create a different effect.
